Importance of Cores in Current Transformer

The application of magnetic core in current transformer is very critical, and its main reasons and importance are reflected in the following aspects:

1. Magnetic flux concentration and magnetic field enhancement
The cores are made of highly permeable materials and are used to concentrate and enhance the magnetic field. When current passes through the primary coil of a current transformer, magnetic flux is generated in the core. This magnetic flux is transferred to the secondary coil, thereby increasing the efficiency of electromagnetic induction.

2. Reduce magnetic leakage
The use of magnetic cores can effectively reduce the phenomenon of magnetic leakage, which is the leakage of part of the magnetic flux around the secondary coil and through the air or other paths. Leakage reduces the induction effect of the current transformer and affects the accuracy of the measurement. Magnetic cores can constrain the magnetic flux in a specific path, reducing leakage and improving the accuracy of the current transformer.

3. Reduce loss
The magnetic core material usually has low coercivity and low loss characteristics, which makes the hysteresis loss and eddy current loss generated by the current transformer during operation smaller. This not only helps to improve the working efficiency of the transformer, but also reduces the heat generation, thereby extending the service life of the equipment.

4. Linearity and measurement accuracy
The linearity of a current transformer is affected by the saturation characteristics of the magnetic core. In the unsaturated state, the output voltage is linear with the input current, ensuring measurement accuracy. However, once the core is saturated, the linearity will be impaired, leading to measurement errors. Therefore, it is critical to select the appropriate core material and design parameters to ensure that the transformer maintains good linearity characteristics under various load conditions.

5. Volume and cost optimization
The high magnetic permeability of the core allows fewer coil turns to be used to achieve the desired induction effect, which not only saves materials but also reduces the weight and volume of the equipment.

In general, the role of the core in the current transformer is to ensure the efficient, accurate and reliable operation of the equipment. Therefore, choosing the right core material and design is crucial to the performance of the current transformer.
